PCE: Improving supplier analysis to reduce emissions

Supply chain engagement

PCE, a superstructure construction specialist, wanted to engage with their supply chain to canvas information on suppliers’ current carbon measurement and management processes. This would facilitate an informed view of the upstream embodied carbon profile. PCE then looked to create a plan to help these suppliers improve their position incrementally in a way that could be tracked and quantified, thereby reducing PCE’s scope 3 emissions in the long term.

Project

Having previously supported PCE to reduce embodied carbon emissions in a construction project by 40%,  Accelar guided PCE in understanding and documenting their supply chains current carbon profile, including processes, data, reduction strategies and benchmarks. Accelar also identified common areas of improvement through which PCE can support their supply chain to reduce emissions incrementally, captured in a supplier engagement plan.

Impact

After identifying key suppliers and engaging with them through a bespoke questionnaire and interviews, Accelar developed a maturity matrix that clearly evaluates the details of each supplier’s carbon emissions journey. Common areas for support needed were identified and communicated to PCE, alongside a briefing note to bring the PCE board up to speed on the outcomes of the project and recommended next steps.

Accelar is helping us explore and understand where our top ten suppliers by spend are on their carbon journey. The team at Accelar are providing both technical insight and impartiality into determining the real word embodied carbon within our construction systems and manufacturing processes and the outputs so far have given us a useful insight into our suppliers strategic and operational focus on carbon reduction. We’re looking forward to the project next steps to understand how we can best support suppliers in this space.

Services

The Accelar team:

  • Reviewed suppliers’ public net zero targets, commitments and plans.

  • Developed a questionnaire to collect all relevant information, including what carbon data suppliers currently collate.

  • Conducted interviews with suppliers to ensure comprehensive understanding and capture of carbon data.

  • Identified areas of common improvement and communicated these to PCE.

  • Developed a supplier carbon maturity matrix to allow PCE to see at a glance where each supplier is on their carbon measurement journey.
