Circular cities in action: Driving progress through policy report

Accelar’s circular economy specialist, Clare OIlerenshaw, has been working with ReLondon to highlight good practice policy in cities that creates the right environment for a circular economy to flourish, with examples from London itself alongside a whole of cities from across the world. The report looks at policy action against a framework set out by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation that see’s a role for city governments in setting road maps and strategies, convening and partnering, awareness raising, capacity building, urban planning, asset management, public procurement, financial support, fiscal measures and legislation and regulation to support a more circular economy.

One of the urban planning policies that the report highlights, that is believed to be unique to London, is the circular economy statement policy within the new London Plan. A circular economy statement is required for all planning application that are referable to the Mayor and requires developers to set out how they intend to manage material use through circular principles including good design, re-use and remanufacture. The report highlights cities that are seeing their circular economy work as part of their climate change mitigation strategies such as Paris, Amsterdam and Vancouver and those that are using circular principles to drive better procurement outcomes such as Toronto, Berlin and the Flanders region.

If your town, city or region is looking to explore circular economy as a driver for change, whether that be as part of a climate action plan or economic development strategy, then please get in touch to discuss the support that Accelar can offer.
